General Charles Ronald Llewelyn Guthrie, Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank, GCB, LVO, OBE, DL (born 17 November 1938) was Chief of the Defence Staff between 1997 and 2001 and Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, between 1994 and 1997. He notably clashed with Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown over military funding.

Army career

Educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst he was commissioned into the Welsh Guards in 1959.[1]

In 1966 he became a troop commander and then in 1968 a squadron commander with 22 Special Air Service Regiment.[1]

In 1977 he was appointed Commanding Officer of 1 Battalion Welsh Guards. In 1981 he became Brigade Commander of 4th Armoured Brigade and in 1985 General Officer Commanding 2 Division.[1]

In 1987 he became Assistant Chief of the General Staff and in 1989 General Officer Commanding 1st British Corps.[1] In 1992 he took command of the British Army of the Rhine and in 1997 became Chief of the General Staff.

Later career

He is a cross bench member of the House of Lords. He was created a life peer as Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank, of Craigiebank in the City of Dundee, after retiring as Chief of the Defence Staff. He was one of the several retired Chiefs of Defence Staff who spoke out in the House of Lords about the risk to servicemen facing liability for their actions - for which politicians are ultimately responsible - before the International Criminal Court, particularly in respect to the invasion of Iraq.[2]

He is a director (non-executive) of N M Rothschild & Sons, Ashley Gardens Block 2 Ltd and Colt Defense LLC, and Chairman (non-executive) of Siboney Ltd.[3]

He is the president of several charities, including Action Medical Research, Army Benevolent Fund, Federation of London Youth Clubs and the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association.[3]

Criticism

Guthrie was criticised in 2008 by George Monbiot for an apparent lack of understanding of international law.[4] Monbiot based his argument on Guthrie's September 2002 advocacy of an invasion of Iraq and subsequent comments, in which he appeared to support launching "surprise wars", something forbidden by the United Nations charter.

Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, GBE, GM, FRS (October 31, 1910 – March 20, 1990) was a biologist by training, a cricketer and a member of the prominent Rothschild family. He was the son of Charles Rothschild and Rozsika Edle Rothschild (née von Wertheimstein).

Life

Rothschild was educated at the Harrow School and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read Physiology, French and English. He played first-class cricket for the University and Northamptonshire. At Cambridge he was known for his playboy lifestyle, driving a Bugatti and collecting art and rare books.

At Trinity, Rothschild joined the secret society, the Cambridge Apostles, which at that time was predominantly Marxist, though he "was mildly left-wing but never a Marxist".[1] There he became friends with KGB spies Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt, who were also members. Rothschild gave Blunt £100 to purchase "Eliezer and Rebecca" by Nicholas Poussin.[2] The painting was sold by Blunt's executors in 1985 for £100,000 (totalling £192,500 with tax remission[3]) and is now in the Fitzwilliam Museum.[4] He is also alleged to have supplied an apartment in London where Burgess and Blunt could meet, leading to suspicions that he was the so-called Fifth Man in the Cambridge Spy Ring. The Fifth Man has never been formally identified, although more than a dozen names have been suggested, including that of John Cairncross.

Rothschild inherited his title at the age of 26 following the death of his uncle Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild on 27 August 1937, and sat as a Labour Party peer in the House of Lords.

World War II

Rothschild was recruited to work for MI5 during World War II in roles including bomb disposal, disinformation and espionage, winning the George Medal. Because of his association with Burgess and Blunt, he was questioned by Special Branch at the time of Blunt's unmasking in 1964 and was apparently cleared, subsequently working on projects for the British government. Rumours continued to circulate, and Rothschild himself took the step of publishing a letter in British newspapers on 3 December 1986 to state "... I am not, and never have been, a Soviet agent." Roland Perry's 1994 book The Fifth Man repeated the charges without firm authority, and there remains no evidence to suggest that Rothschild spied for the Soviet Union. [5]

Post-war work

After the war, he joined the zoology department at Cambridge University from 1950 to 1970. He served as chairman of the Agricultural Research Council from 1948 to 1958 and as worldwide head of research at Royal Dutch Shell from 1963 to 1970. He continued to work in security issues, namely as a security adviser to Margaret Thatcher. He was also head of the Central Policy Review Staff from 1971 to 1974 (known popularly as the "Think Tank"), a high-level committee which provided policy advice to government until Margaret Thatcher abolished it. In 1982 he published An Enquiry into the Social Science Research Council at the behest of Keith Joseph.

Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, the son of Harry Bloomfield, was born in Canada, about 1910. A Zionist, Bloomfield joined the British military and served in Palestine as an Intelligence Officer under General Charles Orde Wingate. Bloomfield was involved in training the Jewish army, Haganah (1936-1939).

President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. Bloomfield was recruited and given the rank of major. In 1947, the OSS evolved into the Central Intelligence Agency, and Bloomfield continued doing contract work for the new organization. Also involved included Defense Industrial Security Command, organized by J. Edgar Hoover and William Sullivan. Torbitt claims that Bloomfield was in control of the operation. DISC agents included Clay Shaw, Guy Banister, David Ferrie, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Jack Ruby.

Louis Mortimer Bloomfield died in 1984. A few years before his death donated 31 boxes of documents to the Library and Archives Canada. This included correspondence with some well-known politicians such as George H. W. Bush. The one condition Bloomfield placed on the donation was that public access to the papers would be restricted for 20 years after his death. However, when researcher, Maurice Phillips, attempted to gain access to these materials in 2004 he found that Bloomfield's widow, Justine Stern Bloomfield Cartier, was still refusing permission for them to be released into the public domain.

Thus, Mr. Piper's linking Bloomfield with Permindex and also the Masonic Jewish Labor Zionist government of Israel was correct. Rabbi David Rosen

Biography

Rabbi David Rosen is the Chairman of IJCIC, the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations, a broad-based coalition of Jewish organizations representing world Jewry to other religions.

He is the Director of the American Jewish Committee's Department for Interreligious Affairs and its Heilbrunn Institute for International Interreligious Understanding.

Rabbi Rosen also serves on the Israeli Chief Rabbinate's Commission for Interreligious Dialogue, and represents the Chief Rabbinate on the Council of Religious Institutions of the Holy Land

He is an International President of Religions for Peace (WCRP); Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews (ICCJ); and serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the World Congress of Imams and Rabbis. Rabbi Rosen is a member of the World Economic Forum's C-100, a council of 100 leaders formed for the purpose of improving relations and cooperation between the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds. He is a founder of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel that embraces some seventy organizations in Israel involved in interfaith relations (ICCI). He is on the Executive of the World Council of Religious Leaders; and is also a member of the Elijah Institute's World Board of Religious Leaders.

Rabbi Rosen was also a member of the Permanent Bilateral Commission of the State of Israel and the Holy See that negotiated the establishment of full diplomatic normalization of relations between the two; and in November 2005 was made a papal Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great for his outstanding contributions to promoting Catholic-Jewish reconciliation

The third son of the renowned Rabbi Kopul Rosen (founding Principal of Carmel College in England) David Rosen was born in 1951 in Newbury, Berkshire, and educated in England and Jerusalem. He served in the IDF and was chaplain to the forces in West Sinai. Subsequently he served as the Senior Rabbi of the largest Jewish congregation in South Africa, in Sea Point , Cape Town, as well as on the Cape Beth Din (Ecclesiastical Court.) and he was the founder/chairman of the Cape Inter-Faith Forum, the Council of Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Thereafter he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Ireland during which time he also served on the Academic Council of the Irish School of Ecumenics. He returned to Israel in 1985 to take up the appointment of Dean at the Sapir Center for Jewish Education and Culture in the Old City of Jerusalem and subsequently became Professor of Jewish Studies at the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. At that time he also served as the Anti Defamation League’s Director of Interfaith Relations in Israel and as the ADL’s co-liaison to the Vatican. In 1997 he was appointed to the position of Director of the ADL Israel office. He assumed responsibility for the interfaith activities of the American Jewish Committee in the Spring of 2001 and he is based in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Rosen married Sharon (nee Rothstein) in 1973; they have three daughters and two granddaughters.

2006 - Gary Krupp

Gary L. Krupp, a native New Yorker, resides in Long Beach, NY, with his wife Meredith. They have two sons, Jarrett and Brett.

Mr. Krupp founded and was the managing General Partner South Shore Imaging Associates (SSIA) and other businesses in the medical field. He helped develop the first multi-modality imaging center on the South Shore of Long Island. In 1990, Mr. Krupp built Williamsbridge Imaging Associates, a single MRI facility in the Bronx, NY. Mr. Krupp was the owner/operator of a 14-station kidney dialysis center in upstate New York that he built in 1992. He also managed the family commercial second mortgage business.

Gary Krupp has worked extensively for the Karitas Foundation, to benefit abused and homeless children throughout the nation and sits on the board of directors of the New York State Trooper Foundation, benefiting the NYS Police. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Coalition to Save Belleayre Mountain. Mr. Krupp sits on the board of the Long Island Forum for Technology.

Mr. Krupp has been recognized for work he has done over the past 20 years to benefit the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a 1,500 bed health care facility in Italy founded by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

On July 29, 2000, Mr. Krupp was honored by Pope John Paul II, and was invested as a Knight Commander of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great. Gary is only the seventh Jewish man to be so honored.

On September 12, 2002, Mr. Krupp received the Centennial Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund for his work with the State of Israel, the Jewish people and the Catholic Church. Most recently, on July 23, 2005, Mr. Krupp was approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to be invested into the Anglican Order of St. John.

Gary Krupp founded the Pave the Way Foundation in 2003, to help bridge the gap between religions through cultural, technological and intellectual exchanges. Most notably, Mr. Krupp initiated the largest Jewish audience in history to meet with the late Pope John Paul II to thank him for all he had done for the Jewish people and Israel.

Mordecai Waxman, Rabbi Who Chided Pope, Dies at 85

Rabbi Mordecai Waxman, a Long Island rabbi prominent in the Conservative movement who in a notable speech in 1987 confronted the pope on the issues of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and Israel, died on Saturday at his home in Great Neck, N.Y.

He was 85.

Rabbi Waxman, speaking on behalf of all organized American Jewry, gave the speech in September 1987 from the stage of an auditorium in Miami, with Pope John Paul II looking on. It came during the first stop of a papal visit to the United States. Rabbi Waxman spoke evenly and with respect, but pulled no punches.

''Greater attention needs to be paid to the Christian roots of anti-Semitism,'' Rabbi Waxman told the pope. He also called for the Vatican to open full diplomatic relations with Israel, something that came to pass in 1993, and he spoke about the ''pain and anger'' among many Jews over the pope's decision to meet with Kurt Waldheim, who was then president of Austria.

The speech came at a time of considerable Catholic-Jewish tension, which boiled over as a result of the Waldheim audience on June 25, 1987. Mr. Waldheim served during World War II in German Army units that were implicated in the deportation of Jews in Greece and reprisals against partisans in Yugoslavia.

The pope responded with a speech that began, ''my dear Jewish brothers and sisters.'' He spoke of the ''common heritage'' of Catholics and Jews, and condemned the crimes of the Holocaust, which he called the Shoah, using the Hebrew term. Without addressing the Waldheim controversy directly, he acknowledged tensions with the Jewish community and committed the Vatican to working to resolve them.

At the time of the speech, Rabbi Waxman was chairman of the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations.

Rabbi Waxman was generally regarded as a leader in working for better interfaith relations. In response to Rabbi Waxman's death, Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore, the liaison between American Roman Catholic bishops and the organized Jewish community, called him ''a major force in the improvement of relations between the Jewish people and the Catholic Church worldwide.''

He noted that Pope John Paul recognized Rabbi Waxman's contribution in 1998 by naming him a knight commander of St. Gregory the Great. He was the first rabbi and the fifth Jew to receive the honor.

Mordecai Waxman was born on Feb. 25, 1917, in Albany, where his father held a pulpit. He received his bachelor's degree at the University of Chicago and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. After briefly serving congregations in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Chicago, he became rabbi of Temple Israel of Great Neck, where he served from 1947 until his death. He was scheduled to retire on Sept. 1.

Rabbi Waxman was an Army chaplain during World War II, serving in Fort Dix, N.J. He was the author of ''Tradition and Change: The Development of Conservative Judaism'' (Burning Bush Press, 1958) and was editor of the journal Conservative Judaism from 1969 to 1974.

Rabbi Waxman's wife, Ruth, died in 1996. He is survived by three sons, Rabbi Jonathan of Elberon, N.J., and David and Hillel, both of Great Neck; a sister, Naomi Perlman of Pittsburgh; and five grandchildren.

Interfaith Pioneer Rabbi Mordecai Waxman dies
Rabbi Mordecai Waxman, former president of the Synagogue Council of America and a pioneer in Christian-Jewish relations, died at his home in Great Neck, New York, on August 10, 2002. He was 85 years of age.
Rabbi Waxman was particularly active in Catholic-Jewish relations, and in 1987 spoke for the American Jewish community in welcoming Pope John Paul II to the United States. For many years, Rabbi Waxman and Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore co-chaired an annual series of Catholic-Jewish dialogues. Rabbi Waxman was also active in formulating a Jewish response to the Vatican document "We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah." In 1998, the Pope named him a Knight Commander of St. Gregory the Great.
Rabbi Waxman was affiliated with the Conservative movement and served for many years as spiritual leader of Temple Israel in Great Neck, New York. His book Traditions and Change: The Development of Conservative Judaism (1958) set forth the basic precepts of this branch of American Judaism.

"Writing a biography of Augustin Bea means writing a part of our history and going over a period that was crucial for the Church as it received fresh life with the breath of the Second Vatican Council. And remembering always means making the person we are recalling present again in our midst".

Cardinal Augustin BeaIn 1986, with these words Cardinal Johannes Willebrands presented the book by Stjepan Schmidt, private secretary to Cardinal Bea, eighteen years after his death. The title of the book, Augustin Bea: The Cardinal of Unity (Engl. Trans., New York 1992), was intended to emphasise that unity was his specific mission. When Cardinal Bea became first Cardinal and then President of the Secretariat for Christian Unity he made the following declaration: "In God's plan, my whole life has been a preparation for this mission. I could not do what I have to do today if I had not held such a variety of positions and responsibilities" (Schmidt 1992: 10). Schmidt's biography is, to date, the most complete. I will make reference to this account to briefly underline some aspects of Bea's activities and personality which appear to be most strongly related to the presence of a Centre for Jewish Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University that bears his name.

Bea's mission is manifested, particularly in the work he carried out before, during and after the Second Vatican Council. He was called by Pope John XXIII to be involved in the ecumenical aspects of the preparation of the Council. He was active in different areas: the preparation of Council documents, the creation of a network of relations with representatives of different faith communities and finally he made a significant contribution to spreading ecumenism. The quantity of Bea's publications, lectures, press releases, and meetings with the Press before, during and after the Council, almost up to the time of his death, was incredible; even more incredible when one takes his advanced age into account (Schmidt 1992: 756-775).

A very special aspect of this activity concerned the work on the document that would in 1965 become the Conciliar Declaration Nostra Aetate, especially with its paragraph 4 concerning the relationship between the Church and Judaism. Shortly after a meeting with Jules Isaac, Pope John XXIII had asked Bea to take up this matter. Hence, Bea, who was an exegete, professor of Old Testament for forty years, and an expert in Jewish literature, devoted himself to this task as if this were a personal vocation. This vocation would gradually mature and deepen.

The long and complex process that led to the realisation of this document is described by Schmidt (1992: 500-535) and has been referred to in other more recent works. One example is the essay by Alberto Melloni "Nostra Aetate and the Discovery of the Sacrament of Otherness", originally part of a lecture series of the to be published in the fall of 2007: The Catholic Church and the Jewish People Since Vatican II: Reflections from Rome (New York: Fordham University Press).

Cardinal Bea's untiring efforts and involvement in conciliation are unanimously highlighted. But I would like to reflect, above all, on what motivated him to do all this, and on his "personal vocation".

In a Conference to the Sisters of Sion, remembering their "particular vocation", Bea underlined how the question of relations with the Jews was "obviously, something both familiar and dear to me". In the outline of the foundations of their vocation, Bea recalled his own personal experience, which had been based on study, on a spiritual life and on apostolic work. (A. He encouraged the sisters to study the Hebrew Bible, to a continuous and meditative reading of it and also to understand Jewish history, at least in a general way, after the time of Christ, as well as the attitude of the Church and the Popes to the Jews.

Bible study and research nourished all of Augustin Bea's life. But in the context of ecumenical activity in his later years this became a sacred commitment, carried out with complete dedication. This dedication directed him, on the one hand towards roads that called for a deep renewal of the Church, on the other hand to keep intact his fidelity to this Church. This apparent contradiction between the two positions which led to him being defined paradoxically as a "conservative reformer" (Schmidt 1992: 722) can be resolved in the unity of his charismatic personality.

In Bea's deep faithfulness to the Church one can see his faithfulness to the spirituality of the Society of Jesus to which he belonged, in that particular hallmark of the Constitutions of St. Ignatius according to which the human person is an instrument in God's hand, but always a living, intelligent and free instrument. He felt that he was "in the hands of Christ and thus of the Church, in which Christ himself lives and works" (Schmidt 1992: 747-748).

Some of Bea's recommendations are still the basis of the relationship between the Church and Judaism. It is, therefore, even more significant to consider the way in which he conceived the dialogue: "Cooperate with any initiative which aims at improving relations between Christians and Jews (.) collaborate with the Jews themselves in a thoroughly friendly way, in the affirmation of religious and moral values (..) Whenever possible, try also on a friendly level to speak about religious matters with the Jews. But, and I state this formally, only on condition that you have a good enough theological background (.). We must never practice false irenism, i.e. dilute the truth. We must proclaim the truth as it is, prudently and with absolute respect for the conscience of others" (General Chapter: Sisters of Sion, 1964). It has been said that by looking at the Cardinal's face, even at a distance, one discovers the face of the Catholic Church. A face, "which he presented from its most attractive side." (Schmidt 1992: 719). It is this face that the for Judaic Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University intends to make reference to.

James Jesus Angleton was born on 9 December, 1917, in Boise, Idaho, to NCR businessman and OSS Colonel James Hugh Angleton, and Mexican born Carmen Mercedes Moreno. Upon Graduation from Yale in 1941, Angleton moved to Harvard Law School where he met his future wife Cicely d'Autremont of Duluth, Minnesota. Inducted into the Army on 19 March, 1943, Angleton was recruited into the OSS in August through the efforts of Angleton's father and Norman Pearson, his old English professor from Yale who was, at that time, head of the OSS Counter Intelligence division in London.(1)

ANGLETON AS CI AGENT IN OSS X-2 OPERATIONS DURING WW II

James Angleton was assigned the Rome desk after Italy's capitulation to the Allies and was made a OSS Lieutenant who ran CI activities that included such countries as Austria, Germany, Spain, the Mediterranean, and Switzerland. As part of OSS operations in the European Theatre of Operations, Angleton mastered the arts of "black" propaganda and "playback" that is, the method of reading the effectiveness of one's own disinformation on the enemy. In 1944, Angleton was given charge of the OSS Special Counterintelligence Unit Z made up of U.S. and British agents and was the youngest member of X-2 and was the only American member that was allowed access to the top secret British ULTRA code breaking intelligence. After the war, Angleton was promoted to captain and received the Legion of Merit from the U.S. Army which cited him for successfully apprehending over a thousand enemy intelligence agents. He was also decorated by the Italian government and was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy, the Order of Malta-Cross of Malta, and the Italian War Cross for Merit. In October 1945, President Truman dissolved the OSS and had all research and analysis units moved to the State Department and operational units to the War Department and were re-designated as Strategic Services Unit. Angleton stayed on in the SSU in Rome and became the vital station chief in charge of the 2677 Regiment which made Angleton the senior U.S. intelligence officer Italy until it became the Central Intelligence Group, forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency.(2)

Rise in influence in the CIA

Beginning in 1951 Angleton was responsible for cooperation with Israel's Mossad and Shin Bet agencies, a relationship he managed closely for virtually the remainder of his career. It has been claimed that, in this capacity, Angleton directed CIA assistance to the Israeli nuclear weapons program (See Samuel Katz, Soldier Spies, 1992)

In 1954 Allen Dulles, who had recently become Director of Central Intelligence, named Angleton head of the Counterintelligence Staff, a position he retained for the rest of his CIA career. Dulles also assigned him responsibility for coordination with allied intelligence services.

From this period Angleton was characterized by colleagues as a chain smoking workaholic who had no reservations about checking cocktail party boastings against official service records — or placing colleagues under surveillance for minor violations of protocol, written or otherwise, including personal indiscretions.

One of Angleton's biggest coups under Dulles was obtaining a transcript of Nikita Khrushchev's 1956 speech to the Soviet Party Congress denouncing Josef Stalin, which the agency made public for its immense propaganda value. Angleton, who obtained a copy of the speech as Israeli intelligence liaison from Shin Bet.[3] , is further said to have then leaked doctored versions of the speech to numerous foreign governments in a disinformation campaign, although Angleton is said to have admitted that this claim was itself disinformation he kept in circulation and that his effort to circulate a doctored version was refused by others in the CIA leadership.

In the days of America's highest fears of Communist infiltration of Congress, the State Department, and the Pentagon, Angleton's zeal permitted the fledgling CIA to fly completely above scrutiny.

After the war Angleton worked for the War Department's Strategic Services Unit. He became the chief counter-intelligence officer for Italy but in 1947 he returned home to join the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1951 he was sent to Israel where he helped establish Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service.

While working in London, was transferred into X-2, OSS' counter-intelligence division. Was later transferred to Italy to head up the Italian desk of X-2. During and after the war, cultivated friendships and contacts throughout Europe, including relationships with Kim Philby and a priest who would later become Pope Paul VI. More importantly, became friendly with members of the Jewish underground in Europe, the forerunners of Mossad, Israel's chief intelligence service.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) basically ‘absorbed’ Nazi Intelligence. Indeed, we find two Knights of Malta as co-founders of the CIA: American Knight of Malta William (“Wild Bill”) Donovan, and German General and Knight of Malta Reinhard Gehlen. In fact, at least three of the heads (directors) of the CIA have been Knights of Malta: William Donovan, John McCone, and William Casey. Additionally, James Jesus Angleton, another Knight of Malta, was the long-time chief of Counterintelligence at the CIA, as well as the head of the CIA’s ‘Vatican Desk’ and ‘Israel Desk’.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) basically ‘absorbed’ Nazi Intelligence. Indeed, we find two Knights of Malta as co-founders of the CIA: American Knight of Malta William (“Wild Bill”) Donovan, and German General and Knight of Malta Reinhard Gehlen. In fact, at least three of the heads (directors) of the CIA have been Knights of Malta: William Donovan, John McCone, and William Casey. Additionally, James Jesus Angleton, another Knight of Malta, was the long-time chief of Counterintelligence at the CIA, as well as the head of the CIA’s ‘Vatican Desk’ and ‘Israel Desk’.

SMOM gave another award, the Croci Al Merito Seconda Classe, in 1946 to [Knight of Malta] James Jesus Angleton, who ran counter-espionage operations in Rome for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. Angleton later went on to head what has been described as the CIA’s ‘Vatican Desk’, but he declines to comment on this activity.”

This gallery of traitors…unified the International Intelligence Community merging at…the command post of Jesuit [Superior] General Janssens in Rome.

With this interlock of men [described above] loyal to the [Superior] General of the Jesuits, the ‘Cold War’ would be waged but kept under CONTROL, that is, from becoming a full-scale war between East and West. The deceived patriots of both sides would be kept in check or eliminated if attempting to truly ‘win’ the Cold War or expose the truth about the intelligence men at the top [levels]. The murder of CIA Director, William Colby, after forcing [Knight of Malta James Jesus] Angleton to retire [from the CIA], is a classic example of their policy.”

Although Edward Wilson never existed, the character is based on the real Yale graduate James Jesus Angleton ’41, who was a counterintelligence expert for the CIA. In general, Yale played a very important role in the development of American espionage, said Gaddis Smith ’54 GRD ’61, professor emeritus of history, and many Yale graduates went on to hold powerful positions in both the CIA and the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA. But Smith emphasized that much of “The Good Shepherd,” including its depiction of Yale in the 1930s, bears little resemblance to reality.

P-2 and Mossad

Along with the darker sides of the P-2, the lodge had also an Israeli connection.The July 1981 issue of The Middle East International Journal established that the P-2 had close links with Israel, especially with Mossad, and that the Jewish community in Italy played an important role in this connection.

In later years, Carlo de Beneditti, the second richest man in Italy, was discovered to have had a close relationship with the P-2 Lodge and also very good contacts with the Jewish communities in Europe and the US.

The foremost names who had contact with the P-2 are Henry Kissinger, Edmond de Rothschild, and David Rockefeller. The Italian journal Panorama wrote that Ellie de Rothschild arranged the necessary amount of money for the Masonic hanging of banker Roberto Calvi, who either had or was about to "talk" against the P-2.67 Henry Kissinger was directly involved at the top of the lodge.

In Papa, Mafya, Agca (The Pope, The Mafia and Agca), Ugur Mumcu, a prominent Turkish journalist wrote, "Henry Kissinger is a member of the Monte Carlo lodge, which is the P-2's 'board of directors,' also known as the Monte Carlo Committee. All the members of this lodge are Grand Masters and Masons of the 33rd degree."68

The alliance between the P-2 and Israel or to be more specific, with Mossad is illustrated by ex-Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky in The Other Side of Deception, published in 1994 after his other greatly controversial book, "By Way of Deception".

Ostrovsky writes that Licio Gelli, P-2's Grand Master, was the ally of Mossad in Italy and that Gelli also had a close relationship with the Gladio contra-guerilla group, allied with Mossad and that Mossad used this Gelli-Gladio alliances for its arms dealings with Italy in the 1980s.

Licio Gelli (born in Pistoia, Tuscany, April 21, 1919) is an Italian financier, chiefly known for his role in the Banco Ambrosiano scandal. He was revealed in 1981 as being the Worshipful Master of the clandestine Masonic lodge Propaganda Due (P2).

A Fascist volunteer

During the 1930s, Licio Gelli volunteered for the "Black Shirt" expeditionary forces sent by Mussolini to Spain in support to Francisco Franco[1], and subsequently became a liaison officer between the Italian blackshirt government and the Third Reich, with contacts including Hermann Göring. He participated in the Italian Social Republic with Giorgio Almirante, founder of the neofascist Italian Social Movement (MSI).[2][3].

After a sales job with the Italian mattress factory Permaflex, Gelli founded his own textile and importing company.[1][3]

After World War II

Gelli collaborated with American and English intelligence agencies after World War II. Gelli also joined the neofascist MSI, which gave him parliamentary immunity. In 1970, he was to arrest the President during the failed Golpe Borghese.[citation needed] As headmaster of Propaganda Due (P2) masonesque lodge, Gelli had ties with very high level personalities in Italy and abroad, in particular in Argentina. The Argentine Chancellor Alberto Vignes drafted with Juan Perón, who had returned from exile in 1973, a decree granting to Gelli the Gran Cruz de la Orden del Libertador in August 1974, as well as the honorary office of economic counsellor in the embassy of Argentina in Italy [4]. According to a letter sent by Gelli to César de la Vega, a P2 member and Argentine ambassador to the UNESCO, Gelli commissioned P2 member Federico Carlos Barttfeld to be transferred from the consulate of Hamburg to the Argentine embassy in Rome [4]. Licio Gelli was also named plenipotentiary minister for cultural affairs in the Argentine embassy in Italy, thus providing him with diplomatic immunity [4]. He had four diplomatic passports issued by Argentina, and has been charged in Argentina of falsification of official documents [4].

As headmaster of Propaganda Due, Gelli allegedly assumed a major role in Gladio's "strategy of tension" in Italy, starting with the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing. Gladio was a clandestine "stay-behind" operation sponsored by the CIA and NATO to counter communist influence in Western European countries, which has been involved in terrorist false flags operations in Italy.[5][6][7][8]

In 1990, a report on RAI Television alleged that the CIA had paid Licio Gelli to foment terrorist activities in Italy [9]. Following this report, which also claimed that the CIA had been involved in the assassination of the Swedish Prime minister Olaf Palme, then President Francesco Cossiga requested the opening of investigations, while the CIA itself officially denied these allegations [10] Critics have dismissed the RAI report as a fraud because of the inclusion of testimonies from controversial Richard Brenneke, who had claimed to be a former CIA agent and made several declarations concerning the October surprise conspiracy. Brenneke's background was also investigated by a U.S. Senate subcommittee, which dismissed Brenneke's claims of CIA employment.[11]

The Gladio affair has been treated by the courts as having no sensible connection with the P2 affair.

FRATERNAL BONDS
Two ancient, mysterious, international fraternities kept the loosely-linked Gladio programs from flying apart. The Knights of Malta played a formative role after the war (see box), but the order of Freemasonry and its most notorious lodge in Italy, known as Propaganda Due (pronounced ''doo-ay'' ), or P-2, was far more influential.

In the late 1960s, its "Most Venerable Master'' was Licio Gelli, a Knight of Malta who fought for Franco with Mussolini's Black Shirts. At the end of World War II, Gelli faced execution by Italian partisans for his Nazi collaboration, but escaped by joining the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps. 23 In the 1950s, he was recruited by SIFAR.

After some years of self-imposed exile in Argentine fascist circles,24 he saw his calling in Italy as a Mason. Quickly rising to its top post, he began fraternizing in 1969 with Gen. Alexander Haig, then assistant to Henry Kissinger, President Nixon's national security chief. Gelli became the main intermediary between the CIA and SID's De Lorenzo, also a Mason and Knight. Gelli's first order from the White House was reportedly to recruit 400 more top Italian and NATO officials. 25

To help ferret out dissidents, Gelli and De Lorenzo began compiling personal dossiers on thousands of people, including legislators and clerics. 26 Within a few years, scandal erupted when an inquiry found 157,000 such files in SID, all available to the Ministers of Defense and Interior. 27 Parliament ordered 34,000 files burned, but by then the CIA had obtained duplicates for its archives. 28

It is known that P2's former Grand Master Licio Gelli is also a Knight of Malta, as are most of Gelli's inner circle within this neo-fascist Masonic lodge, which has members and affiliated lodges throughout the world, particulary in Europe and South America. And P2 are intrinsically linked at the highest level to the mysterious Priory of Sion; the "I'm a Dragon but still a Catholic" secret fraternity sworn to protect the Dragon/Grail heritage, and restore and expand the Holy Roman Empire in any capacity.

Gelli, like Sindona, enjoyed unprecedented access to the Vatican thanks to his close friendship with Cardinal Paolo Bertoli of the Holy See's Diplomatic Corps. Bertoli is known to have introduced Gelli to Paul Marcinkus. Another close associate and member of this "Gang of Four" was Umberrto Ortolani, a former OVRA Intelligence Officer and co-patron for Calvi while he was moving up in the Banco Ambrosiano. Ortolani was also tied to a secretive Roman Catholic order known as the Knights of Malta, and was elevated by Pope Paul VI to the status of "Gentleman of his Holiness." He also sponsored Liccio Gelli for membership in the Knights of Malta.
